Fit Fridays: Well, I Lied

(Yep. I changed the name of this weekly feature. Go with it.)

Remember two weeks ago, when I said I was going to lose weight on my own by becoming a healthier person? And I was going to take small steps but didn't feel like counting calories? Remember that?

Well, I lied.

Because after a week and a half of doing absolutely nothing right and feeling like an absolute failure and waste of space, I woke up bright and early on Sunday morning to attend a Weight Watchers meeting.

My mom had decided, after gaining some of her weight back over the holidays, decided she had to go back because it's a program that works. And as I sat on my couch on Saturday, drinking my second can of Coke before 2 p.m., I knew I needed a kick in the pants. I needed something that would give me the motivation I needed to lose weight and learn how to eat healthier.

And when I thought about it, there has been one time in my life where I have been successful at weight loss. It was in 2007 and I was attending Weight Watchers. I lost 20 pounds, dropped from a size 8 to a size 2, and felt so great about myself.

Amber also left a comment on that blog posting that stuck with me. She said: "You know, it takes TIME to make those healthy habits stick. When I first lost weight in the spring of 2008 I did it by counting calories. It's just now, almost 2 years later, that I'm finally at a place where I can eat intuitively and not have to worry about tracking all my food!" And she's right. It does take time and if I knew how to do it on my own, I wouldn't find myself in this position.

So I'm back and I'm not going to worry about all the other times I've failed. I'm going to focus on this time. My mom re-joined, too, and we're both on board with eating healthier, being more active, and supporting each other. I'm not going to beat myself up if I have a bad day or even a bad week. This time will be different.

It's funny but this week I have felt the most in control of my eating habits this week, more than I ever have this entire year. I feel more on track now that I have to count every morsel of food that goes into my mouth and exercise regularly. I've been drinking more water than I ever have and eating pretty well. Not perfect, but better than before. So I guess this is what I needed to kick-start my new, healthy life.

It's going to work this time. It has to.

  1. My tummy is my problem area, too! And Amber is right, it takes time to develop habits... and I fail epically at it. I do well for about 2 wks, then the tacos start calling my name. I hope you can maintain a positive outlook and healthy goals!!

  2. Hey I do Weight Watchers and it DOES work! Mostly because it's really NOT a diet - I always call it "Healthy Eating for Dummies" because it basically just teaches you how to eat better, and less. But you can still eat the things you want. And I don't know if you're anything like me but I can't just tell myself "oh I'm going to eat better," I have to have a specific plan to follow or I won't do it. Which is why WW works for me. And hey, last weekend I ate cake and cookies and I still lost! So you really can eat what you want, just in moderation. Anyway, it totally works if you work it, so good luck!

  6. My tummy is TOTALLY my problem area.

I'd say if you mess up just keep going. You're bound to have setbacks in the process but as long as you keep going you're on the right track.

  7. Best of luck! And she's right, at least you have boobs! :) I have a smaller frame so if I gain the slightest bit of weight it looks totally out of proportion because it goes straight to my tummy/thighs. Right now I wear two sizes bigger on the bottom than I do on the top :( I'm just trying to even myself out a little bit. I started this week with bringing salads to work instead of ready-meals - but I REALLY have to get up earlier to actually prepare them! These things really do take an adjustment. I'm sure you'll do really well :)

  8. I wish you luck! You have a really good attitude about it, so I'm sure this time around will really be different. It does take time to change habits, so you're bound to make mistakes here and there, but as long as you keep moving forward from them, you'll see results. :)

  9. Good for you. I have been eating healthier as well (still really need to work on this) and bought the 30 Day Shred to do at home. Amber is right, the weight didn't go on over night and we shouldnt expect it to come off over night either. Here's to the both of us getting healthier in the up coming months.

    We can do this!!

  12. Good job lady! You can do it. Another key thing is not letting the setbacks get to you! I used to say "well, I've already screwed myself by eating three cookies, might as well have five more" NO NO NO! That is not the way to think about it, now I say, "OK, I've had three cookies, time to stop before it gets worse" or "tomorrow is a new day"!

  13. Good luck!! I'm also on the Weight Loss train! I've definitely noticed with tracking everything I eat and drink... that it's majority junk.

    Ohy.

Keep up the good work! You can do it! :)

  14. I agree with Amber, of course, I think you have to get into it first and THEN it can be a habit. I've heard really great things about Weight Watchers, so good luck!

  15. I have problems losing weight on my tummy too. People said I've gained weight (approximately 2 kilograms over 4 months) but I'm not about to restrict the love of my life (an excuse of a person who has no self-whatsoever).

Rah rah Stephany! :) Keep it up! I know you can do it!

  19. Go Stephany! You know, I've recently realized how badly my eating habits have escalated. It's not showing up on the scale YET, but I know it's horrible for me! I find myself needing a good kick in the pants, too :)

You're inspiring and awesome, and you have a fantastic attitude about this. Keep up the good work!

  20. Okay you just got me all pumped up! I've had a bad few days of eating, bleh. I find it easier to take it one day at a time since like you said, we need to make the time to make those healthy habits stick and it does take time to make healthy snacks/meals. WE CAN DO IT.
